China Conducts Simulated Strikes on Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions
📍 NEW DELHI: The Chinese military ramped up its presence near Taiwan on Friday, conducting mock strikes with bombers armed with live missiles. These maneuvers are part of a larger exercise by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) under its eastern theatre command, involving multiple attack formations over the waters east of Taiwan.
🔍 Simultaneously, Taiwan's defense forces monitored a significant number of Chinese warplanes and naval vessels close to its coast. This activity marked the second day of a major PLA exercise, coinciding with the inauguration of Taiwan's new leadership.
🎥 China heavily publicized these drills, emphasizing Taiwan's encirclement by PLA forces. A recent state media video depicted animated Chinese forces closing in on Taiwan, effectively portraying the island as surrounded.
🌆 Despite these intense military activities, daily life in Taipei continued uninterrupted. Taiwan's 23 million residents, accustomed to the threat of Chinese invasion since 1949, showed little visible concern.
📊 Taiwan's defense ministry tracked 49 warplanes, 19 navy vessels, and additional coast guard vessels. Notably, 35 planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, the unofficial boundary between Taiwan and China, within a 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday.
🚨 In response, Taiwan's military heightened alert levels, particularly around the Kinmen and Matsu islands, just off China's coast. Marine, coast guard, and missile units remain on high alert.🗨️ "Facing external challenges and threats, we will continue to maintain the values of freedom and democracy," stated Taiwan's new President Lai Ching-te during a visit to a marine base. Lai called on Beijing to cease military intimidation, reaffirming Taiwan as a "sovereign independent nation."
🛡️ China’s military stated that the exercises were a punitive measure against pro-independence factions. Regularly, China dispatches navy ships and warplanes into the Taiwan Strait to undermine Taiwan’s defenses.
⚠️ "As soon as the leader of Taiwan took office, he challenged the one-China principle," said Chen Binhua, a spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office.
🌐 The ongoing tension between Taiwan and China continues, with Beijing’s assertive military posture being a constant source of regional instability. Taiwan remains steadfast in its quest for freedom and democracy amidst these pressures.Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
